Iraq: Entire Anglican Leadership "Wiped Out"

A couple of days ago, the online version of Times reported that the leaders of St George's Church in Baghdad, the main Anglican church in Iraq, were attacked while returning from a conference in Jordan. The attack had happened along the road between Ramadi and Fallujah, a notorious blackspot for terror assaults. Canon White last heard news of the five people travelling on September 13, when he was told they had been attacked the day before.

Those travelling had included Maher Dakel, the lay pastor, Mona, his wife who led the women's section and their son Yeheya, the church's pianist and music director, Firas Raad, and their driver. Canon White, of the Foundation for Reconciliation in the Middle East, is the clergyman in charge of St George's, whose congregation numbers 800.

"It is the most dangerous area in Iraq," he said. "One of two things must have happened. They either got kidnapped or they died. But we have had no ransom demand or anything."
Until recently, Canon White was the Archbishop of Canterbury's representative to the Middle East, and reopened St George's after the 2003 invasion/liberation. He was forced to withdraw due to the escalating violence in the region, and Maher Dakel was appointed to take services in his place. Today, the printed version of the Times confirms that no more news has come of the five travellers, making it seem certain that they are now assumed dead.
