UK: Radio Ramadan's Run In with Regulators
A new radio station was announced this week for Edinburgh, Radio Ramadan. Due to start broadcasting on October 4th, the start of the month of fasting, the station aims to be discussing issues about Islam, such as hijab wearing, women's issues, and racist attacks in Edinburgh since 7/7. And of course, Islamic music. The bosses had invited politicians such as Member of the Scottish Parliament, Colin Fox, and the Scottish born traitor, George Galloway. Broadcast on frequency 87.7 fm, from three undisclosed locations, the station will be aired in Urdu, Arabic and English.
The Edinburgh Radio Ramadan is not the only station to have a month long airing. Across the UK, other regions will have their own RR broadcasts. But there is now a downside. The regulatory service, Ofcom. Ofcom has suggested it would like to work with the broadcasters, to ensure the content is within their guidelines. Muslim leaders are, naturally, miffed at the idea, and are claiming they are being discriminated against. Though RR's have been going for 13 years, they have not had to deal with new advisory codes, brought in in May this year. One clause, on "harm and offense", has got many Muslims into a sense of unease, as it states that programmes must not contain material which "condones or glamorises violent, dangerous or seriously antisocial behaviour and is likely to encourage others to copy such behaviour." If, as they had earlier announced, their programming was to be full of wholesome Islamic fare, then why, I wonder, is anyone worrying?

We are not worried about the new guidelines, since we don't break the law and have never, and would never encourage anyone to break the law. The point of concern is that we feel that our right to freedom of speech is being squeezed, because the terminology used to define the new guidelines is pretty vague.
Thats our only concern. So far we have not had any problems and don't forsee any change, but the possibilty still exists that the powers to be could take a very narrow interpretation if they so wished.
