Spain: Imam Who Wrote How to Beat One's Wife is Disciplined
In Spain, a Muslim cleric who wrote a book on how to beat your wife, without leaving marks on her body, has been ordered to study the Spanish Constitution. The UK newspaper, the Telegraph today reports that Mohamed Kamal Mustafa, who is an imam at a mosque in the southern resort of Fuengirola, must spend six months studying articles of the constitution, and also the declaration of human rights. Last year, he was sentenced by a Barcelona court to 15 months in jail for inciting violence to women, and also given a fine of $2,700. However, despite government objections, a judge had released him after only 22 days in jail, on condition that he takes a re-education course.
Four years ago, Mustafa wrote Women in Islam, which, taking its cue from the Koran, advocates that a disobedient wife can be beaten.
"The blows should be concentrated on the hands and feet using a rod that is thin and light so that it does not leave scars or bruises on the body,'' he wrote."Women in Islam" also taught that verbal warnings, followed by withdrawal of sexual activity can be used to discipline a wife, and if these failed, then the beatings could be administered.
