Iran: Spite Against India - Gas Deal Cancelled

According to Pakistan's Daily Times, the proposed natural gas deal with India has been cancelled by Iran, after India voted in favour of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolution, censuring Iran. This was also announced by the Hindu, even though India has not officially announced that the deal, which would have been worth $21 billion to Iran, had been abandoned. The original deal, signed in June, would have had liquefied natural gas imported for the next 25 years by pipeline to India, at a rate of 5 million tons annually. The first deliveries would have started in 2009.

According to the Hindu, the announcement of the cancellation was carried to Sheelkant Sharma, India's permanent representative at the IAEA, by Iran's ambassador in Vienna. Tehran at present supplies more than 5% of India's crude oil imports. These too may be threatened.
