Iran: Student Bassij Vigilantes Attack British Embassy
Even though he wears western secular clothes (but is too vulgar to wear a tie), President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran seems to be using every means at his disposal to reignite the flames of the Khomeini revolution. He has already replaced many top officials with "hardliners".
Another tactic is to send out members of the Islamist Bassij, to keep citizens "under control", acting now as legally sanctioned "back-up" to the police, and to do the dirty work that is beneath his reputation as a statesman. And, as promised earlier, the Bassij have staged a violent and angry protest today outside the UK Embassy in Tehran, according to Iran Focus. The reason for the protest? Anger that a British-written resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency, censuring Iran's nuclear plans, has been approved.
Stones, eggs and tomatoes were thrown at the building, shattering several windows. Chanting "Nuclear energy is our legitimate right!", "Death to America", "Death to England", many called for the embassy staff to be made hostage, as happened to the US embassy in 1979. Others called for Richard Dalton, the UK ambassador, to be deported. According to the BBC, firecrackers and Molotov cocktails were thrown at the embassy building. When the protests seemed to be out of control, police used batons to control the protesters. One, whose forehead had been cut by a baton swipe, put bloody handprints on the brass plate on the embassy wall (pictured right). The UK commission has received much attention from protesters. In August, a similar situation occurred. Commentators have said that as the US has no embassy in Iran, the UK acts as a stand-in during anti-Western protests.
