US: Lodi Mosque School Will Not be Built
In an article today from the Sacramento Bee, the Lodi Muslim community is upset once again. There had been plans to build a Mosque School, the Farooqia Islamic Center, south of Lodi. But yesterday, San Joaquin County supervisors rejected the request to build the school in amongst a cornfield site, which would have appeared on the Sacramento Road. The supervisors' decision was unanimous.
Neighbours of the 18-acre Farooqia site had appealed, triggering the inquiry and ruling, which lasted two hours. They argued that the building of an elementary school for 50 children, a worship hall and community center would have created traffic congestion, and ruined their rural way of life. Superviser Leroy Ornellas stated that religious buildings should be built in cities, and that he had "a problem with religious facilities built out in the country."
Lodi's Muslim community founders, Muhammed Adil Khan and Shabbir Ahmed, were investigated by the FBI recently, and were recently deported back to their homeland of Pakistan. In 2001, Adil Khan, a cleric from Pakistan had joined the mosque, and helped the efforts to raise money for the center, $420,000, some of which was gained by selling some of the mosque's seven acres of land. Khan was accused by law enforcement agents of having "some very nefarious connections", one disgruntled neighbour stated.
