UK: Parents of Jean Charles de Menezez in London

The parents of Jean Charles de Menezez arrived in London today, for meetings with investigators examining the circumstances of their son's death. Suspected of being a terrorist, their son was shot seven times in the head at Stockwell tube station, even though he was innocent of any crime. The Times stated that Matuzinhos and Maria flew in to Heathrow, accompanied by the family of Jean Charles' brother, Giovani Da Silva. In the article it is said that they will visit Stockwell station tomorrow, but Channel 4 lunchtime TV news states that they are already there.

They stated upon their arrival that they were "searching for justice", and Maria, through an interpreter, said: "I want the police to be punished." They may meet Sir Ian Blair, the head of the Metropolitan Police. The IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission) has promised that the family will be the first to see much of the evidence it has uncovered. However, Nick Hardwick, IPCC chairman, has said that some material will have to be withheld, for reasons of national security.
