Scotland: Muslim School Reprieved - But Must Improve

Scotland's only Muslim school, the Imam Muhammad Zakariya girls' school in Dundee, has survived its attempt to remain on the Register of Independent Schools, according to the Scottish Executive. It had previously been served with a notice of complaint, but despite still being on the Register, it needed further progress. Education Minister Peter Peacock said:

"While a number of improvements - notably in relation to the curriculum offered and qualifications of teaching staff - have been made, the progress has been limited."
Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education will revisit the school in December, to see if changes have been made. It is a boarding school, and it will also have to register with the Care Commission.

In The Scotsman it is reported that previous failings, identified 18 months ago, had included poor staff. None had any teaching qualifications. Also pupils were confined to the school and its grounds for two weeks at a time. Now, a new headteacher is in place, and Education Minister Peacock states:

""This is the start of the process - not the end. The school now has an experienced headteacher at the helm and I want these developments to be sustained and built on. I look forward to being kept informed of progress."
