Pakistan: Dead Women Elected as Councillors
In a bizarre case reported today by Reuters, the police have been called in after two deceased women were elected as councillors in the strictly tribal and traditionalist Upper Dir district in North West Frontier Province. The elections were held last month, and one woman "councillor" was found to have died 13 years ago, while the other is only three years gone from this world.
In July, tribal elders, backed up by Islamic clerics, ordered that women should be banned from either standing in the election or voting. The central government decided that this action was against the constitution, and as a result, hundreds of women flocked to register their ballot. The assistant election officer for Upper Din district, Khushalzada Khan, said that if it were proved that the two new councillors were dead, fresh voting would be ordered for their seats, and an inquiry would be made to find out who had nominated them.
