Spain: 9/11 Al Qaeda Plotter Gets 27 Year Jail Sentence
Syrian-born Imad Eddin Barakat Yarkas, also known as Abu Dahdah, was today jailed in Spain for 27 years for conspiring with others to cause the atrocities of 9/11, but did not find him guilty of killing 2,973 in the attacks on New York and Washington, according to Reuters. Also convicted was Al Jazeera journalist Taseer Alouni, who received a seven year sentence for collaboration with a terrorist group.
24 defendants appeared in Spain's high court, in one of the biggest trials of its kind so far. Of these, 18 were found guilty, mainly for the crime of belonging to, or cooperating with Al Qaeda. Moroccan-born Driss Chebli and Syrian-born Ghasoub al Abrash Ghalyoun were, with Yarkas, found to be associates of the Hamburg cell which helped draw up the plans for the attacks. Imad Eddin Barakat Yarkas was sentenced to 12 years' jail for leading a terrorist group, and a further 15 years for "conspiracy to commit murder" in the 9/11 attacks.
Also today, it was reported in the UK Herald, progress is being made with the case of the Madrid train bomb atrocities of March 11 last year, which killed 191 people. A key suspect, 24-year old Moroccan Abdelmajid Bouchar, had earlier been extradited to Madrid from Serbia, arriving yesterday. He had escaped from a Madrid flat three weeks after the bombings, running off as police approached, shouting a warning to those inside. As the police surrounded the flat, the 7 suspects inside blew themselves up with dynamite left over from the train atrocities, also killing a police special agent.
