US: Cindy Sheehan Arrested
Cindy Sheehan, who protests against the Iraq war, in which her son Casey was killed, was today arrested in Washington, according to Netscape/CNN News. Casey Sheehan, aged 24, was killed last year in an ambush in Sadr City. Widely viewed as an icon for the anti-war protests, 48-year old Cindy Sheehan was the first of several demonstrators to be led away from a protest outside the White House. She was sitting with other protesters on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Her demonstration today was part of a series of recent actions whose highlight had been a 100,000 mass demonstration at the National Mall on Saturday. A smaller group of 500 attended a rally yesterday. These events are being staged by United for Peace and Justice, a coalition of smaller anti-war groups.
"I would like to say to Cindy Sheehan and her supporters don't be a group of unthinking lemmings. It's not pretty,'' said Mitzy Kenny of Ridgeley, W.Va., whose husband died in Iraq last year. The anti-war demonstrations can affect the war in a really negative way. It gives the enemy hope."Spoken truly. Furthermore, to stop the "war" now would leave Iraqi civilians open to unparalleled bloodshed in a civil war betwen Sunni and Shia factions.
