Philippines: Seven Militants Apprehended
A brief report from Radio Australia today relates how seven members of Abu Sayyaf have been captured in an island base near Malaysia. The military released a statement that Jundan Jamalul, a commander of Abu Sayyaf, and six of his militants were taken near the town of Bongao, in the Tawi-Tawi islands. A cache of guns and bullets was also taken.
Abu Sayyaf was founded in the early 1990's, with the aim of "uniting Filipino Muslims, to fight for a Muslim state encompassing the southern Philippines." Both the Philippine and US governments consider Abu Sayyaf to be terrorists with links to Al-Qaeda. The group claims responsibility for the bomb attack on a ferry last year, killing 116 people.
