Nigeria: Mob Kills Man Accused of Witchcraft

While the north of Nigeria has become notorious as a place where sharia law is enforced, other older traditions still exist. In a bizarre story from the BBC, such belief in witchcraft is still strong in Bakori, in the northern state of Katsina. A man who confessed to his involvement with ritual murders, to extract body parts for rituals, has been lynched to death.

Three bodies had earlier been found, mutilated and with organs missing, in the town. When police saw a man attacking a woman, who was calling for help, they took him to the custody of the local chief's office. There he made his confession. Rumours of his involvement in the women's death spread, and soon a mob arrived, and set fire to part of the chief's office. The chief allowed them to take the man, who was then killed.

While Islam is the dominant faith in northern Nigeria, some people also believe in traditional practices - for example that magic charms made from human body parts can bring success.
