Iran: Forbidden Art Displayed in Tehran
The Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran is showing a collection of art that had been banned for 25 years by theocratic clerics for being "anti-Islamic". The collection is drawn from the 400 works acquired by the late Shah's wife Farah Pahlavi, according to today's Sunday Times. They are being shown in the Museum by it's outgoing director, Ali-Reza Samiazar. He has been made to resign by the new totalitarianism imposed by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
There are 190 examples of paintings, prints and drawings in the exhibition, including works by Andy Warhol, Picasso and Toulouse Lautrec. More controversially they have also included a homo-erotic painting by Francis Bacon, featuring two men lying together on a bed, with attendants, though this was only on display for a short time. It was "confiscated" by members of the Basij vigilante militia.
The ousted director claims that, with 2000 visitors a day, the exhibition is the most popular and successful that the Museum has ever put on, and for this reason it is very difficult for the increasingly hardline authorities to close it down.
"Just because I'm wearing a chador doesn't mean I can't appreciate Picasso," said one woman, who gave her name as Zahra. "He's my favourite."
