Kuwait: Solar Eclipse Marks Start of Ramadan
The Islamic Calendar is a solar-lunar calendar, and repeats itself over 19 years - the Metonic cycle. However, as the sun and moon do not exactly march in step, certain calculations have to be made to fix dates within the calendar. This year, the event of Ramadan was scheduled to begin on either Tuesday October 4, or on Wednesday October 5. Fortunately, this issue has now been cleared up, and the month of fasting can begin, we can safely say, on Tuesday 4th.
In an announcement today from Kuna, the Kuwaiti News Agency, the astronomer Dr Saleh Al-Ajeeri has announced that due to a partial solar eclipse, visible from Kuwait in the early part of the afternoon of Monday 3rd, the proper date for the start of Ramadan must be on the Tuesday. He states that the "blackness that will partially cover the sun will move slowly until it disappears", adding that this will take place at 1.28 pm. He went on to explain that this eclipse was one of the signs that point to the beginning of Ramadan, adding that the moon will be visible to the eye at dawn on Sunday, October 2. The crescent will be seen in Kuwaiti skies for two minutes Monday evening, he concluded.
The Prophet Mohammed, though a conduit for revelations from Allah, was highly alarmed when he saw a solar eclipse. In The Hadith of Sahih Bukhari, it is said:
Narrated Abu Musa: The sun eclipsed and the Prophet got up, being afraid that it might be the Hour (i.e. Day of Judgment). He went to the Mosque and offered the prayer with the longest Qiyam, bowing and prostration that I had ever seen him doing. Then he said, "These signs which Allah sends do not occur because of the life or death of somebody, but Allah makes His worshipers afraid by them. So when you see anything thereof, proceed to remember Allah, invoke Him and ask for His forgiveness." - Bukhari Vol II, Book 18, Number 167
