Italy: Fear and Loathing in Milan

The BBC reports on a Muslim school in Milan, which has recently been closed down by authorities. Formerly it taught 500 pupils, and now their parents are holding demonstrations outside the building. The authorities want the children to attend a state school. Tensions have risen since a boy was killed by a car while crossing the road by the school, earlier in the week. Now the Northern League are threatening to come and stage counter-demonstrations there.

The Northern League, key partners in Italy's coalition government, are renowned for their hostility towards immigrants, particularly Muslim immigrants. They have foiled attempts to hold prayer meetings for the boy, and have vowed to fight any compromise made with the parents of former pupils. The school's supporters wish to have Arabic and the Koran taught along with the usual subjects. Many are Egyptian in origin, giving rise to the neighbourhood's nick-name of Little Egypt.

Italy's Interior Minister, Guiseppe Pisanu, has stated that the state school system can allow for the needs of devout Muslims, but they should meet legal requirements. He has promised to be fair to demonstrators, Muslim or non-Muslim, and this has led to many of the Northern League referring to him as Ali Abu Pisanu.
