UK: Convert Guilty of Terrorism Charges: 15 Year Jail Sentence
A British Muslim convert of Jamaican origin, has today been found guilty of two of the three terrorism charges laid against him. USA Today announced that
Andrew Rowe, 34, was convicted of having a notebook containing details on how to fire mortar bombs and a code for terrorism. The jury deadlocked on a third count accusing Rowe of having a pair of socks, adapted with a cord, for terrorist purposes.Rowe lived in Maida Vale, west London, and had become a convert to Islam 15 years ago. According to the Telegraph he had denied that the socks, tied with a pyjama cord were used to clean out the pipe of a mortar. The socks had been found to have traces of explosives on them. He argued that the explosives traces came from when he had been in Bosnia in 1995 where he had gone to "help Muslims", where he had used them as makeshift gloves while handling boxes of ammunition. He had stated that he had tied the sock-ball with the cord to hang from the ceiling during his jujitsu practice.
Rowe had been arrested outside the Channel Tunnel on a train in France in 2003, and it turned out he had several passports. He also had tapes of Bin Laden in the house of his ex-wife, but he claimed they were his wife's possessions. The incriminating evidence which convicted him, the a notebook with detailed instructions on firing a mortar, was found in his own possession, and could not be blamed on his estranged wife, who lives in Birmingham. In another Telegraph article made during his trial, it was said in court that he had been issued with four new passports in seven years:
In January 1996, he was issued with a new, clean passport and left for the Balkans in September that year. He returned in January 1997 with border stamps for Slovenia, Bosnia and Croatia, said Mr Ellison.The BBC TV News has announced that Andrew Rowe, a former drug dealer, was sentenced this afternoon to fifteen years' imprisonment.In September, 1999, he was issued with another new passport after saying that his previous document had been lost in the back of a mini-cab. Three months later he left for Georgia, near the Chechnya conflict. Over the next few years he visited Thailand, Malaysia and Morocco, before getting his latest passport at the British Consulate in Amsterdam.
