Thailand: Islamists Kill Two Thai Marines
A report from Reuters confirmed that two Thai marines, who had been blindfolded, bound, and held hostage by villagers in the southern province of Narathiwat, which borders Malaysia, have been killed by a mob.
The marines were held because they were suspected of being government assassins, provincial officials stated. After a woman had been screaming that security forces were about to attack the village, a group of young Muslim men stormed the house where the men were held, and attacked the hostages with knives and clubs. The two marines, a lieutenant and a petty officer, had apparently been involved in a shooting incident previously in a village teashop, in which one person had been killed and four wounded.
Thai Defence Minister Thammarak Isarangura denied the men had been involved in the shooting incident, saying they had arrived in plain clothes at the village, purely by chance. Most people in Narathiwat are ethnic Malay and do not speak Thai. The region was annexed by Buddhist Bangkok a century ago.
The violence in Southern Thailand has been extreme. Buddhists have been attacked by Muslims and vice versa. In the southern city of Pattani, posted threats by Islamists against shopkeepers who trade on Fridays, the Islamic sabbath, which include threats to kill or cut off ears, have caused economic stagnation and crisis, according to Associated Press. Many Muslims have escaped to neighbouring Malaysia, which is seeing itself under strain, according to Reuters. The Malaysian government claimed it would not immediately return 131 Thai Muslim refugees. An analysis to the background of the recent violence is given here by Reuters.
