Philippines: Muslims Protest against Arroyo
Earlier today, on the 33rd anniversary of the declaration of martial law by then-president Ferdinand Marcos, thousands of Filipino Muslims went on demonstrations in Cotabato City in Mindanao, in Manila and other cities. According to IslamOnline, the demonstrators (left) were comparing current Prime Minister, Gloria Arroyo, with Marcos. Their banners carried slogans such as "Arroyo, Fake President - Resign!" The Muslim Moro communities feel that as the Arroya government widens its searches for potential terrorists and suspects, they too are being victimised. One Moro representative, Amirah Ali Lidasan, has particularly attacked the employment of US troops and military resources in the hunt for terrorists. There are claims made by Moro groups and some human rights campaigners that there have been systematic abuses against citizens. On Friday August 22, a Filipino "International People's Tribunal" found Arroyo and her government guilty of "human rights violations".
