Philippines: Islamists Hire Christian Mercenaries
From Sky News: a military report from the Philippines claims that members of Islamist terror group Abu Sayyaf have recruited a hundred or so Christians from the nation's two southern provinces. They are believed to be used soon in operations against the port city of Zamboanga. It is here that there is a division of the Philippines' military, the Southern Command, and it is here that American anti-terrorism exercises regularly take place. Zamboanga, which is mainly Christian, has already suffered several Abu Sayyaf bombings.
Men from this city and also the nearby island of Basilan have been inducted by Abu Sayyaf. They were offered up to $450 each to join up. Those who recruited them, Abu Sulaiman and Albader Parad, are on the US's list of wanted men. The head of Abu Sayyaf, one Khaddafy Janjali, has so far evaded capture, despite a three month manhunt, concentrated in the southern province of Maguindano. Abu Sayyaf have tried to recruit now operatives from this province too, and also from the nearby island of Jolo. Last year, members of Abu Sayyaf bombed a ferry which sailed between islands, killing 116 individuals.
