Philadelphia Cleric Sentenced to 7 Years' Jail
Yesterday, it was reported by 6abc.com that a leading Philadelphia Muslim cleric has been sentenced to seven years' jail for racketeering and related charges. 67 year old Shamsud-din Ali exploited his connections to get donations, city contracts and "dubious loans". He was also ordered to pay restitution fines. He has not gone to jail yet; he was allowed free while he waits for his appeal.
More than a dozen Philadelphia city officials have already been convicted in what has been dubbed the culture of "pay to play". Shamsud-din Ali was charged on 34 counts, and found guilty of 22, including racketeering. A leader of a mosque in West Philadelphia , Ali and his wife Faridah had a Muslim school, which they used as their own cash-cow, soliciting donations and public funding for adult education classes that never took place/ Five members of Ali's family were on the payroll, including two who did not even live in the state. Mrs Ali was also convicted on similar charges, and has been given a sentence of one year's house arrest.
