Uzbek Mujahadeen Plead Guilty

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan -- Fifteen men pleaded guilty Tuesday to participating in an uprising in eastern Uzbekistan in May that led to what human rights groups say was a government crackdown that left more than 700 dead.The guilty pleas by the men, mostly in their 20s and 30s, came as prosecutors opened the trial and alleged they were linked to a Muslim extremist conspiracy to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state.
Western human rights officials, meanwhile, released a report alleging that police have engaged in a brutal intimidation campaign since the May 13 uprising in the city of Andijan, including forcing people to confess that they belonged to extremist religious groups.
