UK: Bishops Want to Apologise to Muslims over Iraq
In one of the dottiest ideas supplied recently by members of the Anglican Church, a group of senior Church of England bishops have decided that a "truth and reconciliation" commission should be formed, to apologise for the "West's errors". Announced in tomorrow's Daily Telegraph, a working group of clergy, led by the Bishop of Oxford, the Right Reverend Richard Harries has compiled a dossier.
This 101 page document, entitled Countering Terrorism: Power, Violence and Democracy Post 9/11, is available in a pdf download here. I must warn you that it is 101 pages long.
The gist of it is this - it would be impossible to militarily pull out of Iraq now, for fear of an impending civil war, and because no stable democracy has yet been established in the country. The authors document various wrongs committed by Britain and the West, such as suppporting Saddam Hussein, and then creating sanctions, which caused suffering to the Iraqi people. It is also critical of American motives for invading Iraq. As Tony Blair and his government were unwilling to apologise to the Iraqis for their "suffering", the bishops suggest a meeting of religious leaders could provide a "public act of institutional repentance".
