Denmark: Artists Too Scared to Take on Islam
A brief article in Little Green Footballs, shows there is something rotten in the state of Denmark. It is the threat of radical Islam. After the murder of Theo van Gogh in Holland, and a violent attack made upon a Denish lectirer at the Carsten Niebuhr Institute, few artists are willing to deal with Islamic subject material.
In a fortnight, author Kare Blultgen will be publishing a book on Mohammed. Blultgen has approached three artists with the hope that they would illustrate the book, but has had the offer rejected in all cases.
The fears of Islamic reprisals have been taken up by Frants Iver Gundelach, president of the Danish Writers' Union, who states that they present a "gross attack on freedom of speech". The union will be discussing the issue at their next meeting.
