Forget McDonalds - try Burqa King instead!

A report from Arizona Republic, originally from the New York Times, tells of the delights of a French eatery in Clichy Sous Bois, a dull suburb of Paris, made famous in an erotic novella by Henry Miller. The new burger restaurant is just like any other, except it is halal. The Beurger King Muslim serves fast food, and its name, despite my frivolities, is a play on words - "beur" is slang for Arab. Every time a sale is made, the cash register displays the slogan "Salamalekum" - Arabic for "Peace be With you". The food is served by veiled women, and even comes in boxes marked with a clown. And they give cheap plastic toys with the meals. To make their premises as user friendly to their Muslim clientele as possible, they even have lavatories with hoses, for those who do not like using paper.

Sadly they will not be washing down their meals with Islamic cola from the UK manufacturer the Qibla Cola Company, as according to the BBC, last week it went into receivership. The Islamic Cola, Qibla (whose name derives from the direction of Mecca employed in prayers) was intended to rival Iran's Zamzam Cola, and France's Mecca Cola.

And on the subject of burgers and Islam, the Scotsman newspaper reported a fuss made in a Park Royal branch of Burger King last week in London. A Muslim took offence at a design on the lid of one its ice cream cones, stating that it resembled the Arabic inscription for Allah. The burger chain withdrew the dessert and is now having to spend thousands of pounds redesigning the lid, with "backing from the Muslim Council of Britain". The offended Muslim was Rashad Akhtar, 27, of High Wycombe.

He was not satisfied by the decision to withdraw the cones and has called on Muslims to boycott Burger King. He said: "This is my jihad. How can you say it is a spinning swirl? If you spin it one way to the right you are offending Muslims."

How easy it is to offend some people.
