Book Review: Red Horizons
(Note: This will be in a first in a series of book reviews, which I will attempt to make into a weekly feature every Sunday. Most of the books will be related to Islam and the West, if only tangentially. With that said, let us begin.)
Whenever his head would fall upon his pillow, right before going to sleep, Pacepa would pray. The act itself is unremarkable--most human beings pray, at least sometimes--except for an odd fact: his full name was Lt. General Ion Mihai Pacepa, and he was Communist Romania's intelligence Chief.
In Red Horizons: Chronicles of a Communist Spy Chief, Pacepa explains his tradecraft by discussing actual cases and events; the corruption, by sexual means, of Western diplomats, plain-old buying influence, the "silencing" of dissidents, all of it. That itself makes the book worth reading. But what makes the chronicles truly chilling is how such deceptively simple operations contributed towards the larger objective of weakening the West's resolve. It was all part of a master plan to obtain money, technology and political prestige.
The operation was codenamed Horizon, and as intelligence operations go, it was remarkably successful. Romania was able to obtain most-favored nation status, as well as advanced technology, and even cash. All of this without changing the Communist regime's thuggish behavior one bit.
What I've written so far, hopefully, has convinced the reader that Red Horizons would make an interesting read. But beyond that, why would a practical reader, wishing to understand the present rather than dwell in the past pick up this book? After all, it was published in 1987, and the regime and political system it denounces doesn't even exist anymore. The answer, I think, is two-fold.
First, Communism didn't die, it just suffered a setback with the implosion of the Eastern Bloc. It still survives in various forms around the World, and in Latin America it's even staging a comeback. This should have been expected; Communist ideas were never defeated, and sooner or later the true believers were bound to get lucky. So this threat has not gone away.
Second, Red Horizons might be most valuable not for what it teaches us about Ceausescus and his regime, but because what it teaches us about ourselves. The West is now facing a battle of survival against Islam, and the weaknesses which allowed the Communists to manipulate us are being exploited by our Islamic enemies towards the same end. Pacepa's book thus brings us a bitter drink of wisdom. We should be wise to drink from it.
