Islamic family values

Westerners assume that when immigrants come to live in the West, any unsavory aspects of their culture of origin will be left behind or will fade as each successive generation becomes more Westernized. This is true with most immigrants, but immigrants from Islamic countries are different. Islamic culture specifically discourages assimilation into non-Islamic culture. It has the effect that Islamic communities actually become MORE ISLAMIC with each passing generation, not less Islamic.

From Spiegel Online is the sad story of the increasingly common phenomena of "Honor" killing.

In this particular case, beautiful Hatin, a mother of a five-year-old, committed the grave sin of divorcing her Turkish husband whom she was FORCED to marry at the age of 16, moving into her own apartment, enrolling in a tech school and to add insult to injury, she started dating German men. For this she was shot to death and her five-year-old son is now motherless.

It's hard to single out which aspect of this vile honor killing phenomena is most disturbing; the killing itself, that so many Muslims see women as whores simply for living a western lifestyle, that the murderers are hailed as heros in the Muslim community or how very reluctant Germany is in addressing this issue.

"People were afraid they would be called Nazis if they dared to bring up issues of human rights in the Turkish community," said Serap Cileli, a Turkish author and filmmaker who at 15 was forced into an arranged marriage.

When Cileli fell in love with another Turkish man and threatened to break free, her mother came to Turkey, kidnapped her two children and took them to Germany. She then gave Cileli an ultimatum: give up the lover or never see the kids again. At first Cileli chose the kids and a life in Germany. But unlike many other stories, hers has a happy ending -- the lover later followed her to Germany and, after an enormous struggle with her family, the pair married and now live together with her children. She has written prodigiously about her experiences and now helps Turkish women escape oppressive families.

For the greater part of a decade, however, Cileli was unable to find a publisher for her work. "Everything I wrote from 1994 to 1999 was rejected, even by newspapers," she said. "They told me I was writing about a minority issue and they were afraid of appearing racist."

Isn't it ironic? The gravest sin in Islamic society is for a woman to act like a Westerner, punishable by death. At the same time, the gravest sin for a Westerner is to be a bigot or a racist, punishable by an end to a political career or being ostrasized. So, Westerners stay silent about problems within the immigrant population to avoid even a suggestion of bigotry or racism. All the while the cancer grows to eventually kill the host.
