French Hire Official Imam for Prisons

In a report from abc news, it is announced that an official Imam has been appointed by a Muslim organisation, the French Council of the Muslim Faith, to act as spiritual guide and mentor for French Muslim jail detainees. Out of the 56,000 prison inmates in the country, half are Muslim, a staggering amount, considering that Muslims only comprise 5-6% of the national population.

The Imam, Hassan El Alaoui, is a math high school teacher, and was hailed last week by the French Justice Minister, Pascal Clement, as someone whose role was "extremely important". Clement said the Celeric's role would protect against the militant forms of Islam that threatened the whole nation.

El Alaoui has already had experience of working in prisons, working before as a prison chaplain in the northern city of Lille. The French Council of the Muslim Faith was founded in 2003, being the first "national" organization in the country. As in Britain, where many prisoners become converts or radicalised in Britain, France has had its own prison-indoctrinated radical, Khaled Kelkal, who committed bombings in Lyon and Paris before being killed in a police shootout.

There are no Muslim chaplains in the armed forces, leading to Rabbis offering advice and succour to Muslim soldiers, but according to France's Defense Ministry, there are pans afoot to remedy this by the end of the year.
