UK: Seven Arrests - Links to Ricin Case

Yesterday morning, six men were arrested in London, and a seventh in Manchester, by police and Immigration Service officials, according to the Times newspaper. Detained under the Home Secretary's newly assumed powers to deport individuals threatening national security, the names of the seven have not been revealed. However, it is believed that they are all Algerian, and some may have been involved in a collapsed trial earlier this year, in which a plot to poison Londoners with ricin was revealed.

Of the alleged gang, only one, Kamel Bourgass, was found guilty of conspiring to cause a public nuisance through the use of poisons and explosives. When police tried to arrest Bourgass in Manchester in 2003, he stabbed a detective constable, Stephen Oake, to death, and was also convicted of his murder. Beans of the castor oil plant, Ricinus communis, source of ricin, were found in his apartment. Ricin is one of the deadliest poisons known. It was used to murder Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov in 1978, by a miniscule pellet fired into his leg with a fake umbrella.

The other Algerians named from the Kamel Bourgass case are: Mouloud Sihali, David Aissa Khalef, Sidali Feddag and Mustapha Taleb, who were acquitted, and three others had charges dropped. These were:Samir Asli, Mouloud Bouhrama and Kamel Mezoug.

In yesterday's raids, according to today's Times, the six apprehended in London were in custody at Long Lartin Maximum Security prison in Worcestershire, and the Manchester individual was held at Full Sutton prison near York. This brings the total number of people detained under the Home Secretary's new powers to 17. Last month the radical cleric Abu Qatada and nine others were detained. It is expected the seven will be deported to Algeria, as soon as a deal can be reached with Britain, guaranteeing their exemption from torture and death. It has been announced by officials that these detainees are the first of many. Next week they expect to arrest a number of radical clerics.
