Indonesia: Australian Embassy Bomber Sentenced
In today's Scotsman, it is reported that in Indonesia, the man accused of helping plan and execute the suicide bombing at the Australian embassy has been sentenced to death. The bombing last year claimed 10 lives, mainly Indonesian guards and passers by.
Iwan Darmawan, aged 30, had surveyed the area three times, bought the explosives, and persuaded the suicide bomber to drive the lorry at the embassy, according to the presiding judge, Roki Panjaitan. The judge further stated that the attack had been funded by al-Qaeda, to avenge the slaughter of Muslims by America and its allies in Iraq."
Darmawan is the most senior of six accused of organizing and executing the attack, and has been an advocate of the imposition of Sharia Law in the country. He has up until now denied his part in the bombing, which police have liked to Jemaah Islamiyah, the local branch of al-Qaeda. In 2003, Jemaah Islamiyah carried out a bomb at a hotel in Jakarta, which killed 12 people, and famously caused the Bali bombings, which took the lives of 202, mostly tourist, civilians, in 2002.
After the decision, Iwan Darmawan, 30, said : "I am grateful to Allah for this punishment because it means I will die a martyr. Why should I be afraid?"
