September 11th, Four Years On

Four years ago, Islamic Supremacists attacked targets in New York and Washington D.C., destroying the World Trade Center. That much is clear. Shortly after, President Bush declared "a War on Terrorism". How goes the war?

A month after the attacks, the United States began a war to bring down the Taliban government in Afghanistan. The war was successful in short order. A coalition government of "moderate" Muslim groups was put in power. The al-Qaeda bases in Afghanistan were destroyed, but many Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters found sanctuary accross the border, in Pakistan. Four years on, the war continues, with raids and counter-raids on both sides, the United States, as expected, still holding the upper hand militarily.

A year after the attacks, on September 12th, 2002, President Bush began his political campaign to destroy the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. Bush offered three reasons for the planned invasion; the alleged posesion of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD's) by Hussein, the human rights violations of his regime, and the democratic transformation of the Middle East that would follow the democratization of Iraq. A preemptive Peace Campaign significantly damaged the effort, exposing America's and the West's weak points in the process, our philosophical contradictions. After the United States and British forces finally went on with the invasion, a quick military victory followed. Our intent on "rebuilding Iraq democratically" backfired, however, as our political weakness has allowed a terrorist insurgency to flourish. American forces still dominate the battlefield, but the war has lost its political support at home, a bad omen for the future.

In Israel and the Palestinian territories, America has followed an immoral policy of "even-handness", while Europe is openly and viciously pro-Palestinian. The Islamic aggression against Israel has been rewarded with the recent Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Against all logic and morality, Israel is the most reviled country in the World.

In Iran, the Mad Mullahs support as much aggression as they want, oppress their own people as Islamic dictatorships do, and are making significant advances in the contruction of the atomic bomb. With America's will to invade sapped, their regime is as secure as ever.

In Europe, the demographic Jihad continues, the political correctness as stiffling as ever, and very few people do a thing about it. (There are some good signs, like the French banning the Hijab in Public Schools, or the British deporting some particularly vicious preachers, it is not enough, however.)

Following that September morning, four years ago, there was near unanimity among commentators that "the attack had changed everything." How naive of them. Events are powerless to change human beings, if a philosophical change does not accompany them. Our philosophical weaknesses have not been remedied, and until it does, we will continue to lose this war. May we in this fourth tragic anniversary, begin to work together to change this.
