German Young Liberals support Hijabs

The Islamic progaganda site Islam Online has run an article about how members of Julis, a German youth group affiliated with the FDP, have supported the wearing of hijabs. The Julis group in the German state of North Rhine announced that everyone is entitled to make free choices, and veiled women are part of society. There is no policy from their parent party, the FDP, to support the wearing of the hijab. In fact in the North Rhine, the FDP spokesman in education affairs, Ralph Fizel, actively supports a ban on the wearing of hijabs.

The FDP, or Free Democratic Party calls itself liberal, but it is liberal only in that it supports the free market. Made up mainly of Protestants, its influence in the coalition government (led by Gerhard Schroeder's Social Democrats) has been dwindling. In a recent poll, the FDP dropped down in popularity to only 6 per cent of the electorate. With only one per cent less, the FDP will not be allowed to remain in the coalition government, according to the country's system of proportional representation.

So when a group of stupid young idealists, a minority within a minority, in only one state out of sixteen, decides to accept the hijab, it is no big deal, despite what Islam Online would have you believe. There are a lot of Muslims in Germany, 3.4 million, and Turks make up two thirds of the Muslim community. Turkey has been officially secular since 1923, and few of these wear hijabs or veils anyway. The members of Julis are not representative of any meaningful political majority, and as their ages range from 14 to 25, many of them are too young to vote. Holding such naive views, that is a relief.
