"Islamic Mafia" Persecutes Holy Land Christians
Church leaders in the Holy Land have been given a dossier by Christians living in the region, according to the Telegraph. We reported on the incident that occurred in the Christian village of Taiba below, but that was a single event. The dossier given to Church leaders details 93 incidents of attacks by Muslims upon Christians. It also details 140 cases of land theft, taken in a planned systematic pattern, carried out by Muslims.
The effects of these cases has caused the community of Christians to shrink considerably, with 20% of the population Christian 60 years ago, down to 2% now. Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Jerusalem's senior Franciscan, who is called the Custos of the Holy Land concurs, and states "we don't want to see violations of the law - sometimes we have to raise our voices".
Appeals to the previous Palestinian leadership to restrict the actions of Muslim gangs have been in vain.
A spokesman for the Apostolic Delegate, the Pope's envoy to Jerusalem, said nothing had been done to tackle the problem. "The Apostolic Delegate presented a list of all the problems to Mr [Yasser] Arafat before he died," he said. "He promised a lot but he did very little."Mr Qumsieh has had inter-faith consultation to attempt to halt the violence, which has included one man losing a finger in a dispute over land, and a Greek Orthodox monk injured at a 5th century monastery near Bethlehem. The dossier handed to the Church authorities details one incident where two Christian girls were accused of prostitution and murdered in 2003, even though it appears post mortems revealed they were virgins.In the offices of his tiny Christian television station in Bethlehem, Samir Qumsieh said this week that Christian appeals to Mr Arafat's successor as Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, had also gone unheeded.
"At least Arafat responded," he said, "Abbas does not answer our letters."
Local Muslims are also highly critical of Christian women's dress and freedoms, and have even physically threatened a moderate imam from Bethlehem's largest mosque, after he denounced the poor treatment of Christians in one sermon.
