Swiss Imams must learn Swiss Values

In today's UK print edition of the Daily Telegraph, I noticed a small article on page 18, tucked away at the bottom of a column. It is not on their online edition, so I cannot provide a link. This week, laws were rushed through in Switzerland to target Islamic preachers. These rules demand compulsory integration for those seeking residence permits.

Switzerland has 350.000 Muslims, 4% of its total population, and 43% of these Muslims are Turkish in origin, and 36% hail from the Balkans.

The new laws are set to come into force next February. They will be applied throughout all 26 cantons within the country, but will not apply to people already living in EU countries. One and a half million foreigners reside in Switzerland, with most being European. At present, cantons have decided their own approach to how they issue residence permits.

Under the rules, foreign preachers will have to take compulsory language courses and demonstrate an "absolute respect" for Western values if they want to get a residence permit.

The issue has taken a long time to become law. It was widely discussed in the latter part of 2004 when the proposed regulations were first announced. See Islamonline and American Perspective.
