Intolerance Increases in Iran

Today, a report appeared in Iran Focus, about Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam, the country's newly-appointed State Security Forces commander. He announced that, as part of a crack-down on dissidents in the country, he was employing the services of Islamic vigilantes, from the group Islamist Bassij. This new onslaught against those viewed as "troublemakers" coincided with the start of the new academic year, when a lot of people travel in the country. In a report on a Farsi-language government website, Moghaddam has announced that there was "a formulation of cooperation between State Security Forces and the Bassij".

Another report from Iran Focus makes for grim reading, and is a sign that Iran is becoming more hardline than it has been as of late. In provincial centres, prosecutor's offices will be enforcing strict Islamic dress codes upon women, with punishments of immediate flogging for those who violate the code.

In Shahin-Shahr, a city in central Iran, large notices have appeared on shop windows and on billboards, posted by the prosecutor's office. Violators of the code will have to appear before a Sharia judge immediately after arrest, and will receive the maximum sentence. Usually, this is 100 lashes, performed publicly. The statements said:

"Individuals whose state of attire and make-up is against religious laws in public will be prosecuted without having to first wait in a queue and will be sentenced to flogging and fines..."

"Scarves which do not cover the hair and neck", "tight overcoats or coats that which finish above the knees and whose sleeves cover to a point higher than the wrist", "tight trousers which do not cover the calf of the leg", and "women's make-up" are all forbidden, according to the statement, which added that failure to adhere to the dress code would be dealt with accordingly.

If a woman's hidjab does not cover up her hair properly, she will face a penalty of between 10 days and 10 months imprisonment.

State condoned thuggery and medieval repression of women do not indicate a society that is at peace with itself. And certainly not a country to be treated with kid gloves by Western politicians any longer.
