Belgium's Ban on Veils and Headscarfs is Challenged

Belgium has three distinct traditional communities in its population, The French, The Flemish and the Walloons. On August 26, the French Community Prime Minister, Marie Arena, ruled that in schools, no hats nor other headwear should be worn. This would obviously include the hidjab, or headscarf, worn by some Muslim students.

According to a brief report in WebIndia, Ms Arena's ban is now set to be challenged by The Movement Against Racism, Anti-Semitism and Xenophobia, or MRAX. The Director of MRAX, Didier de Lavaleye stated that a complaint had been lodged with the Council of State, stating the ban contravened Belgium's constitution, and also international accords. He added that 80% of schools in Belgium's French community have enforced the banning of hats, headscarfs, et alia.

I always thought the hidjab was worn by people of a religion, not a race, but there you go. This is Belgium we are talking about.

In the Flemish community, the situation is even more interesting, as in the Dutch-speaking north, the nikab (veil) and the burqa (full-body and face coverings) are banned outright in certain towns, and this is for everyone, not just school students. This ban is enforced in Ghent, Antwerp, Sint-Truden, Lebbeke and Maaseik.

The only person so far to have made a big issue here is, of course, a polticised Islamist, one Moroccan-born Mrs Bouloudo. According to a report in the Daily Telegraph last week, the woman has been fined the equivalent of $150, but has so far refused to pay. Living in Maaseik, her husband is Khalid Bouloudo, named in a Brussels court as one of the men accused of helping terrorists who were involved in the Madrid train bombings, and also with a bombing incident in Cassablanca from 2003, in which 50 people were killed.

Mrs Bouloudo has refused to cooperate with police and municipal authorities. The mayor of Maaseik, Jan Cleemers, said he acted after six women started wearing burqas, alarming local residents. Five put away their costumes, but Mrs Bouloudo refused.
