UK, Canada and Pakistan Cooperate in Hunt for Bombers
A report in the Pakistan Daily Times announces that at the end of this month, a six-person team of British and Canadian explosives experts will arrive in Islamabad, to investigate a network of bomb-makers of Pakistani origin. The men they are investigating are Canadian and British nationals, who are believed to have imported explosives training equipment from the US into Pakistan in June 2003. The material was sent by courier service, but was intercepted by Pakistani authorities.
Apparently the network was uncovered after the computer of a Pakistani-Canadian, Momin Khawaja, was examined. Details of the explosives training equipment, and its export, were discovered during a search. The importer, according to Pakistani sources, was named as Junaid Babar. He had escaped the US after 9/11.
A joint UK and Canadian report stated that Junaid Babar, Momin Khawaja and Haroon Rashid Aswat had met in London in February 2004. Aswat is now in UK custody, and is suspected of masterminding the London bombing atrocites of 7/7.
Junaid Babar is said in the document to have stayed at the offices of Al-Muhajiroun, the now-disbanded UK extremist organisation, and in Lahore after fleeing the US. He is said to have kept in contact with Momin Khajawa via the web, accessed via internet cafes. He solicited the services of one Akram Khan, an importer/exporter, to have a suitcase brought to Pakistan from America. This contained the explosives training equpiment, seized in 2003.
