French Refugees from Hijab Ban
A report from Islam Online gives details of a wave of French Muslim girls seeking their education abroad, where they can continue to wear the hijab, or headscarf.
The ban on all ostentatious signs of religion in French public schools was described here, on its first anniversary. The report from Islam Online tells the story of Turkish-born Cennet Doganay. A year ago, in protest at the French law, she attended her school in Strasbourg, northern France, wearing her hijab. When she removed it, she revealed a totally shaved head. Now 16, Cennet has been educated outside of France.
The countries favoured by the hidjab refugees are Belgium, Switzerland and Turkey. Their numbers are not high - only 20 or so, according to the "March 15 and Freedom Commission". There have been 44 school expulsions from French schools, and most of these are receiving private tutorials, financially assisted by French Muslim groups. Apparently, according to the report, the International Hidjab Solidarity Day was celebrated in London at the weekend, on 3rd September, though this has not been reported in British media.
