Florida Court Upholds Ban on Veil in License Photos

In a report filed today on The Mercury News, a Muslim woman has been told that she cannot hide her face in her driving license photo. This 38 year old woman, Sultaana Freeman, attended the Fifth District Court of Appeal at Daytona Beach, Florida.

In 2001, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles gave the woman a driving license, in which only her eyes were visible, but later revoked it.

In 2003 she had an appeal in Orlando, in which she claimed her 1st Amendment rights had been violated. The Circuit Judge (Janet C. Thorpe) then told her that her right to free exercise of religion would not be impaired by having a photograph of her whole face. Governor Jeb Bush passed legislation making a full-face picture on a driver's license to be mandatory in that year.

Concerning this failed appeal, her attorney has said that she will appeal again.

I have to say this stupid and selfish woman cannot seem to understand why people have their faces on a driving license, and I also wonder if her blind and foolish faith really would make her safe to drive at all. A headscarf allows for all-round vision, but a nikab, or veil, is extremely restrictive. I expect she is trying to further the politicised aims of her faith, and I had better say no more, in case her attorney, Howard Marks, tries to sue me for libel.

Keywords: Nikab, burqa, burka, hidjab, hijab
