Egyptian Elections Tomorrow
There is little more campaigning that can be done. Tomorrow, Egypt's voters will visit their polling stations to decide who will be their president for the next six years. Hosni Mubarak, the incumbent president, has been in power for 24 years, and even at the advanced age of 77, he looks set to win the elections tomorrow. This is the first time that the elections have resembled normal elections, with 10 other candidates fielding entries. The notorious but popular Islamic group, The Muslim Brotherhood, have previously boycotted the vote, as they are not allowed to put up any candidates. This year was the exception, and they supported it.
A report in today's Times gives details of the other candidates, including one whose manifesto claimed that all men should wear fez hats. Despite predicting an overall win for Mubarak, it claims that:
At times Mr Mubarak, who has run this country unopposed for so long that most Egyptians have known no other leader, looked like a man fighting for every vote. In the four previous elections Egyptians were offered a simple "yes" or "no" on extending his mandate. In 1999, he secured a 94 per cent "yes" vote, a rating bettered in the region only by Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi dictator.Though the result is viewed as a foregone conclusion, it is claimed that this small opening up of democracy could be seen as the beginning of a new chapter in Egyptian politics, and could herald more democracy in the future.
