UK Queen Patron of Holocaust Trust

The issue of commemoration of the Holocaust, or Shoah, has seen a certain amount of controversy in Britain, particularly when the Secretary General of the Muslim Council for Britain conspicuously failed to attend the recent Holocaust Memorial Day celebrations this year. (Even though he could attend a memorial arrangement for the founder of terrorist group Hamas, Sheikh Yassin). The date usually set for Holocaust Memorial Day is on January 27. This is the anniversary of the liberation of the death-camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust had formerly been set up by Tony Blair, after lobbying by Jewish groups, but until recently it had been under the aegis of the UK's Home Office. The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, now a charity, has managed to get the highest profile patron available, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The date for the next Holocaust Memorial Day will be shifted to January 26, to avoid it falling on the Jewish Sabbath. According to today's Times, a minister for the Home Office, Paul Goggins, has said that the annual Holocaust Day should help to challenge intolerance and racism. One hopes that he is right, and it is refreshing that the Queen, who attended the event earlier this year, is finally giving an official, royal, seal of approval to the event.
