French Headscarf Ban One Year Old
A year ago, France responded to growing Islamic intransigence by banning all displays of religious items in its public state-funded schools. These included large crosses, stars of David, but also the notorious hidjab, or headscarf, commonly worn by many Muslim girls. There was anger at first when this law was introduced, and even international blackmail. Two French hostages were taken in Iraq, and their kidnappers announced that they would only be freed if France rescinded the so-called "headscarf ban". Fortunately, deft negotiations by diplomats allowed these hostages to be freed.
A report in today's Times newspaper gave an overview of the current situation, reporting that the ban had been a success. France has one of the highest per capita populations of Muslims in Europe, with at least 5 million abiding there. Muslim girls still wear the "voile" to school, but remove it at the school gates. Before the law was enacted, many would wear the headscarf in classes - more than 5000 at the start of the new millennium, and in the 12 months prior to the ban, 1465. Since the law was passed, only 626 girls have tried to wear them in class, and 496 removed them after discussions with head-teachers. 45 refused outright, and were expelled, and the others went to private schools, where the law does not apply.
