Muslim is Crowned Miss England
The winner of this year's Miss England contest is a beautiful 18-year old, who came to Britain from Uzbekistan when she was 9. Hammasa Kohistani can speak six languages including Farsi, Russian and French, and was awarded 11 GCSE's at grades A to C. Her beauty is not without brains.
This year's competition saw four Muslim girls, Miss Kohistani and Dilay Topuzoglu, 19, Sarah Mendly, 23, a biochemistry graduate, and Sonia Hassanien, 21, take part. This is the first time a Muslim has won the competition. Before the contest, many Islamic leaders voiced their opposition, as shown in The Times. Hashim Sulaiman, of the Liverpool Islamic Institute, stated of Miss Mendly, who is Iraqi-born:
"There is no way a Muslim girl should be playing any part in this competition, because it is unlawful. The ladies in that contest are always very scantily dressed and the only part of the body that should be on display are the face, the hands and the feet.Miss Mendly was the favourite to win, but Hammasa Kohistani was voted the judge's favourite. In response to her Islamic critics, Miss Kohistani is reported in today's Telegraph as saying:
"I would like this girl to withdraw from the contest immediately. I do not know what she was thinking in entering in the first place and I do not know what her parents were thinking when they allowed her to do so."
"I don't think I have done anything wrong. I have the utmost respect for the strong beliefs of the religious leaders."She said her family were behind her:
"As long as they're happy, then my conscience is clear that I have done nothing wrong,"Having got so far, the Miss World final now awaits. It will be held in China in December. Should she not win - she has a consolation prize. She has been offered a part in an Indian Bollywood movie.
