Al Qaeda Links to 7/7 Bombings

A report in today's Sunday Times details the role apparently played by Al Qaeda in the bombings on London Transport on 7th July. Few can have missed the video, first broadcast on Al Jazeera television on Thursday last week, in which Mohammed Siddique Khan, aged 30, was shown declaring his jihad. Khan was the oldest of the bombers, and is assumed to be their ringleader. At the time of the video release, there was still a reluctance on the part of investigators to link the bombers' plan with any organisation beyond Britain's shores. Things are now less certain.

The video's release restored the aftermath of the London bombings to the heart of Britain's domestic political agenda. There is a consensus among experts that the tape was given to Al-Jazeera by the Al-Qaeda leadership as new footage of Ayman al-Zawahiri, second in command to Bin Laden, also appears on it.

Al-Zawahiri's claim that the London bombings were a direct response to Britain's role in Iraq is calculated to reignite Tony Blair's difficulties over the war.

The production of the video shows great similarities with other known Al Qaeda video-releases, and thefootage is now being examined frame by frame. Even the wording is near-identical. Michael Scheuer, formerly head of the CIA's Bin Laden Unit says there is little doubt that Khan acted under the Al-Qaeda leader's instructions. Evan Kohlman, another US terrorism expert, and M J Gohel of the Asia Pacific Foundation have similar opinions. In the video, Khan, who is British but from Pakistani parents, has a distinctive headdress, worn in Saudi style.
