Islamists' Fun & Games at Quakers' Expense

The Quakers have long had a reputation for tolerance, and at their Friends House in central London, near Euston, they have allowed groups from other faiths to use their rooms for a small fee. But just recently, they have been led on a "merry dance" by a group of radical Islamists.

The group is Hizb-ut-Tahrir, whom the Prime Minister has decided to outlaw. This unpleasant group has threatened riots should they be banned. Their former leader was the now exiled Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed (who also founded Al-Muhajiroun and its two breakaway sects, Al Ghuraaba and the Saviour Sect). Hizb-ut-Tahrir's stated aims are the formation of an Islamic state in Britain.

The Quakers had agreed to let their meeting space to a group called Salsa Bills Publishing House. In fact, the Hizb-ut-Tahrir publicity had announced that there would be a meeting there called Hizb-ut-Tahrir and the Vision of the Caliphate, including a discussion of women's roles in Islam. At the same Friends House in January, Omar Bakri Mohammed had held a meeting with the group, glorifying September 11's US attacks.

No-one at Hizb-ut-Tahrir admitted knowledge details of how the bookings were made, but the Quakers refunded the fee and cancelled the booking. That was reported two days ago in The Times.

However, since then things seem to have reversed themselves. The Hizb-ut-Tahrir group, which is banned in Germany and Russia, has persuaded the Quakers that their meeting will be about peaceful issues. Imran Waheed, the party's spokesperson, said the Society of Friends had known about the details all along, according to the Times this morning. So which group is telling the truth?
