Crisis in Bangladesh

On Wednesday 17 August, about 400 bomb blasts went off in various locations around the country, killing one man and a 10-year old boy, and injuring at least 100 others. Leaflets at each blast location bore the name of the banned Islamist organisation, Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen. The pamphlets called for the establishment of Sharia Law. The BBC reports that today, a one-day general strike has begun in the capital, Dhaka. Organised by the Awami league, its supporters claim the Islamists are being given protection by parties in the government, in the country's ruling coalition. Now where have we heard that before? Yes, Pakistan.

Pakistan was founded in 1947 by Mohammed Ali Jinnah as a secular nation, and in 1971, the Bangla-speaking regions seceded to form Bangladesh. According to its government's constitution, "The state religion of the Republic is Islam, but other religions may be practiced in peace and harmony in the Republic.". Recently there have been attacks against Christians in the country.

Wednesday's bombings occurred in 63 of the 64 districts of the country, and are the first of their kind to be carried out in Bangladesh.

100 people have been arrested in connection with Wednesday's bombings, and nine are still being questioned by detectives. Two have already confessed. The behaviour of Bangladesh's jihadists is disgraceful and barbaric, even by the standards of an Islamic country.

A report in today's Calcutta Telegraph makes uncomfortable reading:

The young man's feet were tied to a tree, his head dangling inches above the ground. A microphone was held to his mouth while he was tortured so that the villagers who were not present to witness the "trial" could hear his screams.

The first to hear them were the men in uniform who did not stir from the police station, not far from the tree. The screams rose and fell till the man was dead.

Their mission accomplished, the killers issued fresh warnings to villagers against straying from the Islamic way, swore their loyalty to Bangla Bhai and left the scene.

The incident is one of about 500 cases of killing and torture by Bangla Bhai's armed Islamic bands that were documented by Taskforce Against Torture, a human rights group founded in Bangladesh three years ago.

And just like Pakistan, Bangladesh has just started to have battles with India along its border, which commenced yesterday (Friday), according to us.rediff.com, who have also provided background information as to how the situation has escalated, including reports of a huge arms dump on the Bangladeshi side of the border.
