Saudis Kill Al-Qaeda Leader
Security forces in Saudi Arabia announced that they had killed the suspected leader of the country's branch of Al Qaeda in a gun battle earlier today (18 August). Former prison guard Saleh Mohammed al-Aoofi, also called Saleh Awfi, was shot dead in the outskirts of Medina. The spot was shortly to have been visited by newly-crowned monarch, King Abdullah. Another man was found dead at the scene.
According to the Guardian, al-Aoofi had led the country's Al Qaeda operations since his predecessor was killed by police a year previously. The Times related that in April it was said that he had been killed, along with 12 other Al Qaeda militants. One of these was Moroccan terrorist Abdulkarim al-Mejjati, who is said to have had links with perpetrators of July's London bombings.
The BBC quoted the interior ministry as saying: "Investigators were able to prove through verification procedures that one of the two killed is the wanted Saleh Awfi." The Guardian expanded on this by stating that: "human remains found at the Riyadh site indicated at least one militant was blown apart in an explosion. It said one extremist was arrested and a cache of weapons, explosives and money was found."
A fuller account is also given by CBS News. Al-Aoofi is presumed to have been the man responsible for the June 2004 kidnapping and subsequent beheading of engineer Paul M. Johnson Jnr, whose decapitated remains have been shown on various websites.
