"Islam is PEACE, LOVE , FAMILY and CHARITY Terrorism it doesn't teach...."
Allow me to be a contrarian, a devil's advocate, as it were (The Catholic Church before declaring someone a Saint, appoints scholars to dig out any and all information about the candidate's life that could disqualify him).
I am neither saint nor scholar, but I do have common sense, reasonableness, some information and a notion or two.
This first important premise is that there is no squeaky clean pulpit to preach from. As a matter of fact, hardly an apple crate to stand on. I define myself as a Judeo-Christian-Humanist. That is my heritage, my general perspective. I am not a Christian missionary, nor would I ever dream of saying Christians are blameless or that all Christians are good.
Let's make it easy on ourselves. Let us leave the planet earth and imagine a distant planet populated by "humanoid creatures" who've never met Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus and don't know a darned think about our earthly glories and horrors.
These people have their own beliefs. Their Prophet is called Koombah, who like Buddha here on earth was just a teacher and claimed no link to any divinity.
Lord only knows how, an electronic version of the Koran reaches them.
What do they read?
Amputate the hands of a thief; men have a measure over women; don't make friends with Jews and Nazarenes; make people of the book feel subdued and force them to pay a special "Jiyiza" poll tax, whip women for adultery; ...injunctions regulating slavery, others regulating divorce, (one - if memory serves - that even suggests how divorced females must wait before remarrying, even those who have not had their menstrual cycles YET - children I wonder?!). Words about smiting fingertips, severing necks.
And - occasionally amidst threats of eternal woe, shirts of fire, and being filled with molten bronze, some good stuff too.
Are we out of context? Absolutely. What could be more out of context than a planet one zillion light years away?!
Yet Muslims claim that the Koran is the uncorrupted word of God. God created the universe, so the Koran must be valid for all times and places.
Examine the Ayahs from this perspective - without any cultural stake in either defending or denouncing, but merely as a religious text meant for the universe - and I'm afraid that one by one, a great many injunctions will appear to be harsh, senseless, primitive, useless, DANGEROUS.
Read the basic tenets of Christianity: forgiveness, turn the other cheek, love they neighbor as thyself, give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's, etc. and though certainly debatable, one sees concepts that COULD be valid. Concepts that COULD travel.
What appears to be an incontrovertible truth is that much of Islam has to do with PRACTICES. It is presented in the form of injunctions (Do it this way, do it that way), whereas much of Christianity is about ideals (it is presented in the form of parables, requiring, DEMANDING, by their very style, INTERPRETATION).
Are the Gospels out of context on that distant planet? No, not at all (if they are humanoids). If instead they are highly intelligent gelatinous, hermaphrodite creatures who - for example - are programmed to have 1 year long mating periods where they must (in order to survive as a species) revert to an animal-like state, then, of course, not even Christianity would make much sense. Who knows, maybe Buddhism still would?!?!
Now, let us instead plunge back to planet earth with all its past and present glories and horrors. Islam has been around 1400 years. What does common sense suggest? Well, that those "armed" with the word of God, (despite their "imperfections" as human beings) would certainly be better off in many tangible ways than those without.
Can Islamic "flavored" people honestly make such a claim? Are they "better off" in any way? (If my computer has Windows XP, I would imagine some perks vis-a-vis MS-DOS 3.1).
Well, not by any measurable "earthly" parameter. In truth, the Judeo-Christian-Humanist tradition quite literally dances circles around the Islamic world. Wealth, inventiveness, quality education, abundance of foodstuffs, tolerance, the ability to turn erstwhile enemies into friends, the ability to admit ones past mistakes, technology, musical genres, charity donations, scholarships offered, attention to the environment, farming practices, animal husbandry, medicines, pensions.
There's hardly a single earthly parameter where having the word of Allah has meant something measurably better. Quite the contrary!
Where is the wisdom of the Ummah if even thousands of miles away from a political flashpoint such as Israel and Palestine, millions of people hear sermons in their Mosques calling for the annihilation of Jews, Zionists and all the enemies of Allah? Why this need to spread the hate to "distant" Muslims whose perspective, if anything, could be useful to peacemaking?
I live in Italy, a Catholic country. On occasion I go to church, but I have yet to hear a sermon suggesting that I kill, hate or attack the Protestants of Ireland. Whatever the issue between them in that distant land, at least on a religious level, we leave it to those directly involved to sort it out. We might pray for the situation to get better. End of the religious involvement.
Look at the map. In every single Muslim country bordering a "Kaffir" country, or with a large non-Muslim minority in its midst (or in a non Muslim country with a sizable Muslim minority) there is war, strife, terrorism, trouble. Look at the TV, read the statistics and 95% of all present day terrorism is Islamic flavored.
True Islam, bad Islam, phoney Islam, good Islam?
No one has, nor ever could have the answers. Three people cannot agree on how to make a proper hamburger, imagine 1.3 billion agreeing about what "proper" Islam is! There being no "papal" authority, no one can claim orthodoxy.
Our only objective parameter is to see who is allowed into Medina and Mecca. If allowed, than he's "Muslim" enough. If barred than he's plainly not.
(If it's a piece of ground beef between two buns, then it's a hamburger. Catsup, mayonnaise, with pickle, without, red onion, white onion, tomato... who the hell knows?)
Muslims boast of their growing numbers. They all do. Therefore if they can boast of "positive" results, they can be held accountable for negative results.
Within that 1.3 billion and growing (allowed to go to Medina and Mecca whereas the best of "us" are barred), we see in the year 2005 very interesting phenomena. I say the year 2005 to mean: a world of Internet, mobile phones, travel, space exploration, job out-sourcing etc.)
We see, along with wars and terrorism, Burquas, Buddha statues being exploded; we see Hindu Indians and Muslim Pakistanis, both immigrants in "laboratory" Great Britain, attaining as groups, wildly different results. We see lands of great economic promise reduced to misery, we see dictatorships, satrapies, Fatwas calling for the death of intellectuals... charities going to terror organizations, Internet chats and forums where beheadings are praised... and we see in the land guarding the Holy Cities (where the best of "us" are still unworthy to walk on the same ground as the worst of "them"), Catholic Filipino workers who must hide their Bibles like Junkies holding heroin.
Imagine going on Hajj and passing through a place where a dying Catholic Filipino worker, perhaps physically destroyed by the blazing desert heat, is not allowed the comfort of "extreme unction" (what Catholics receive on their death bed). Would you, an Atheist, Buddhist, Hindu, Jew, Whatever, deny a Navajo Indian, a Punjabi Sikh, an Eskimo Pagan the comfort of his last rites? For the love of Allah! The man is dying. He believes in what he believes: would you not allow him a last blessing? Would you not be incensed if your temporal or religious authorities forbade such a blessing? Incensed as a matter of principle.
Are Muslims incensed? Hardly a one. They go to Saudi Arabia and revel in their brotherhood in cities locked out to you! They will (rightfully) say that Mecca is Mecca, and not the politics of Saudi Arabia... yet they will ignore the politics of Saudi Arabia (blaming them on those who purchase petroleum).
What does this mean? That there is a woeful lack of "conscience." They do not feel any pain but their own. They are incapable of rising up against the injustices in their midst, if those injustices are perpetrated on non believers.
Conversely they feel with boundless poignancy any and all injustices perpetrated against them - real or merely perceived as such.
Muslims DO NOT have a conscience towards NON-MUSLIMS. PERIOD. British Muslims are not turning in the terrorists in their midst.
Compare the Islamic world's anger and horror for the Iraqi prison scandal, - horrible indeed, but little more than fraternity style hazing when compared to the mass graves of Saddam, the horrors of Sudan, the slaughters of Algeria, Timor, etc. Naturally one cares for ones own more - that is human. We all have a drop or two of "mafia" in us... But there comes a point where "measure" is indeed indicative of something more disturbing than normal human hypocrisy. And that something is a "skewed" mindset, similar more to that of hooligan soccer fans than to what one might nirmally expect from a moral religion.
Let us now return to that distant planet. Now - Lord only knows how - the Hadith and the biography of the Prophet somehow stream in. They show a 53 year old man marrying a 6 year old girl. They show him, supposedly the last of the prophets, ordering hundreds of prisoners to be decapitated. They show him praising a blind man for stabbing a poetess to death for the sin of lampooning him. They show lapidation for adultery.
Does anyone wish to compare the prophet's example (as described not by "Islamophobes" but by people who deeply loved and venerated him) with that of Jesus or Buddha?
Can anyone really give credence to a holy book with a chapter entitled "BOOTY?!!" Did you know that the Holy Koran prescribes taking female war prisoners and having sex with them? (They're called possessions of the right hand).
Does this "word of God" stand up to reason, reasonableness? Did you know that it prescribes "slave for a slave?" (I unjustly kill your slave, then you may in just retribution kill one of mine). Sorry Bob!
This is from God? Or is it from the 7th Century of a planet one zillion light years away?
Let us plunge back to planet earth again. Whitechapel Great Britain. A huge Mosque and Islamic center is inaugurated. Thousands of Muslims attend, so many in fact that a great many must wait out on the side streets.
Giving the keynote address for the auspicious occasion, is Sheikh Abdur-Rahman al-Sudais, imam and preacher at the Al-Haraam mosque - the most important mosque in Mecca. He's not a pope, as mentioned there are no papal figures in Islam, but he definitely is a prestigious figure.
This same "honored man" - "prestigious figure" is also on record for saying this:
"Oh Allah annihilate the Jews! Arabs of the world give up peace initiatives with them because they are the scum of the human race, the rats of the world, the violators of pacts and agreements, the murderers of the prophets, and the offspring of apes and pigs. Read history, and you will understand that the Jews of yesterday are the evil fathers of the Jews of today, who are evil offspring, infidels, distorters of [others'] words, calf-worshippers, prophet-murderers, prophecy-deniers... the scum of the human race 'whom Allah cursed and turned into apes and pigs...' These are the Jews, an ongoing continuum of deceit, obstinacy, licentiousness, evil, and corruption..."
Yes indeed... PEACE, LOVE , FAMILY and CHARITY... and huge mosque and Islamic center inaugurations in the WEST, where scholars who know the Koran, Hadith and Sunnah backwards and forwards, who've dedicated a lifetime to study of the tasfeer (Islamic interpretations), who preach in that place where the worst of "them" can go, but not the tippy-top best of "us" calls Einstein, (and his father and his sons) apes and pigs; Mr. Intel Chip (a Hungarian Jew) - and his great great uncle and his grand grand niece, the scum of the earth, Dr. Salk, inventor of the Polio vaccine that saved millions of lives (and his mother and his aunts) deceitful, evil and licentious.
Something's not right. Something's screwy.
Oh, in UK, that same Sheik talked about the need for community understanding, and inter-faith outreach.
Whatever...
Year 2005... 1400 years with the word of God. I don't expect perfection, I don't require examples of Shangrila, but I would expect something a little better than Dr. Goebbels from the Imam of the Mecca, as well as from the Imam of Rome (largest mosque in Europe), who was unceremoniously booted out by the Minister of the Interior. (The Imam of Milan is on the lam, and the Imam of Florence is in jail, busted for having plans to blow up shopping centers).
Yes, yes, PEACE, LOVE , FAMILY and CHARITY... and I bet you they like pizza too!
Hey, anybody want to buy the Brooklyn Bridge?

A very good start marco.
Your theory that these muslims came from another planet is very plausible.
Although they wouldn't have the brains to develop means of space travel, someone else obviously had enough of them and transported them to our unfortunate planet.
Keep up the good work and your blog should be a great success.
